A Beginner's Guide to Surfing Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of the best places on Earth to learn to surf. Warm water, consistent waves, and a welcoming culture make it a no-brainer for first-timers. Here's everything you need to know before you paddle out.
Choosing the Right Board
Forget the shortboard for now. As a beginner, you want:
- A soft-top longboard (8β9 feet) β stable, forgiving, and easy to catch waves on
- Most surf schools provide boards, but renting a quality soft-top from a local shop is affordable
Where to Surf
Not all Costa Rican breaks are created equal. Stick to these beginner-friendly spots:
ποΈ Playa Avellanas
Mellow beach break with multiple peaks. The northern section is perfect for learning, and Lola's beach bar makes the perfect post-surf hangout.
ποΈ Tamarindo
The classic first-timer destination. Plenty of surf schools, gentle whitewater, and a fun town to explore after dark.
ποΈ Playa SΓ‘mara
A protected bay with small, rolling waves β ideal if you're nervous about bigger surf.
Surf Etiquette 101
- Don't drop in β the surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority
- Paddle wide β go around the break, not through it
- Hold onto your board β a loose board is dangerous for everyone
- Respect locals β you're a guest in their lineup
What to Bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+)
- Rash guard for sun protection
- Water shoes for rocky entries
- A big appetite β you'll burn serious calories
Final Thoughts
The best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun. Don't stress about standing up on your first day. Feel the ocean, respect its power, and enjoy the ride.
